About this work
A colored lithograph by John Samuel Pughe, dated 1900, shows a small barefoot child in a red sash holding a sheet labeled "Plan for Model Tenement" and pointing toward a circular view of a crowded multistory tenement with fire escapes and packed balconies. Seated spectators in a theater box, several with name placards, watch the scene, while a reserved seat is marked for Russell Sage.
