About this work
A colored political cartoon titled Then and now, published in 1898 by Udo Keppler. A nurse with a Red Cross armband tends a wounded soldier on a grassy shore, while an elderly Uncle Sam in striped trousers and a naval coat stands beside them with a sword. Above, a cloud-borne scene shows armored conquistadors with a banner charging against fallen native warriors, contrasting past conquest with present care.
