About this work
A Japanese woodblock print shows a roadside village scene beneath tall, windswept pine trees, with thatched-roof houses and a pair of laden pack horses on a sandy path. Travelers in hats and traditional dress move past rice fields toward distant hills, and calligraphic poem inscriptions and seals appear in the upper sky. This print is Plate 28 of the Tokaido gojusantsugi series by Utagawa Hiroshige, held by the Portland Art Museum.
