About this work
A Japanese woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, dated 1855, shows a windswept shoreline with gnarled pine trees framing a rough blue sea. Several figures in layered robes and formal dress stand on the sandy beach near a tall white banner, while a flock of geese crosses a pale sky above a distant line of pines.
