About this work
A woodblock print titled Hitotsuya no tsuki by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, dated 1880, shows a gaunt old woman with a wild expression holding a flaming torch beside a wooden doorway at night. A full moon hangs above tall pampas grass, a rope stretches across the upper frame, and a lattice screen and bamboo railing frame the scene. The print is held in the Portland Art Museum collection.
