At 11, Yoshitoshi was apprenticed in Edo to Kuniyoshi, one of the great masters of the Japanese woodblock print. His bloody battle prints of the 1860s made his name, though they're only a small part of his work. After years of depression and poverty, he changed his artist name to Taiso, meaning "great resurrection." His last years were among his most productive, with the series One Hundred Aspects of the Moon. He died in a rented room in Ryōgoku, Tokyo, in 1892.
