About this work

A woodblock print shows a kabuki actor in a black robe decorated with large white crest roundels, wearing a tall black hat and a patterned sleeve with a sword hilt visible. The actor's exaggerated face and stern expression are rendered in bold color against a plain beige ground. The print is attributed to Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III), dated ca. 1813-1833, and titled The Actor Ichikawa Ichizo in the Role of Masakiyo.
