About this work
This Japanese woodblock print shows a stone stairway climbing toward a torii gate and shrine buildings with steep tiled roofs, framed by pine trees. Townspeople carrying baskets ascend the steps while travelers and figures watch from the wooden houses along the slope beneath a sky streaked with red clouds. The work is attributed to Utagawa Hiroshige and dated ca. 1825.
