About this work

A hand-colored engraved diagram from 1660 by Andreas Cellarius shows concentric planetary spheres labeled Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury and Moon around a small central Earth. A band of zodiac signs in pink, green and yellow encircles the outer sphere, while cherubs hold a banner at the top and allegorical female figures frame the lower corners. Two small inset diagrams compare the Ptolemaic and Tychonic cosmological hypotheses.
