About this work
This etching, Nocturne; Palaces by James Abbott McNeill Whistler, dated 1879, shows tall palace facades rising along a water front. Loose, hatched lines and soft tonal washes dissolve the architecture into hazy reflections on the water, with a few mooring posts at the right edge.
