About this work
A hanging scroll shows a dense crowd of men, women and children gathered in a Japanese interior, many seated on mats and absorbed in writing, painting and conversation. Ink outlines with light washes of pink, green and grey describe the figures, scrolls and wooden railings. The work is attributed to Kawanabe Kyōsai and dated ca. 1876, depicting the Nakamurarō in Ryōgoku.
