About this work

The sheet shows three swallows in flight rendered in black ink with red throat markings and pale underparts against a warm beige paper ground. The birds are drawn in varied poses, one upside down, reflecting the sketchbook character of this plate from the Album of Sketches by Katsushika Hokusai and His Disciples, dated to the 19th century.
