About this work
This ink drawing from the album of sketches by Katsushika Hokusai and his disciples shows a seated figure in a wide-brimmed hat and robe, leaning over an open book on a low table. Dark brushwork depicts bamboo or plant forms on the right, with the pale paper left largely open on the left. The sheet is mounted within a speckled gold-flecked border.
