About this work
A multi-panel chromolithograph by Samuel Ehrhart, dated 1897, shows a central group of exaggerated working men and agitators raising fists and tools under the caption "Down with selfish, grasping capital!" Surrounding vignettes depict charitable institutions such as a museum, hospital, kindergarten, library and college, each labeled with the names of wealthy donors. The composition contrasts the complaints of the poor with the philanthropy of the rich.
