About this work
A richly colored lithographic cartoon shows a ship deck crowded with caricatured theatrical performers, opera singers and acrobats confined in cages and crates, while stagehands and well-dressed men handle the cargo. Labels such as "Fragile, Handle with Care" and "French Plays" and the title "The annual invasion" point to a satirical commentary on the yearly arrival of European performers, drawn by Samuel Ehrhart in 1905.
