About this work
A colour lithographic print titled "If they'll only be good" by Samuel Ehrhart, dated 1900. A tall figure in striped trousers and a top hat, dressed as Uncle Sam, gestures toward a group of Indigenous islanders on a tropical shore while American soldiers and a flagged ship appear behind him. Women in period dress offer the islanders books, including a "History of Civilization" subscription, in a satirical depiction of American imperial expansion.
