About this work
A colored lithograph titled Evolution of the ‘hold-up’ by Samuel Ehrhart, dated 1901. The composition contrasts a roadside stagecoach robbery on the left, with a masked highwayman and startled passengers, against a hotel entrance scene on the right where staff and guests crowd around a pile of luggage. A caption at right quotes a landlord telling staff to get wages from the guests.
