About this work
A hand-colored lithographic cartoon titled Concerning the American girl, made by Samuel Ehrhart in 1904. A clergyman holds a scroll reading "The steady decline of womanhood from its old ideals" while a child peeks from behind a green curtain, and a series of vignettes show women in new roles such as teaching, exercising, typing, practicing medicine and law, driving an ambulance, and nursing.
