About this work
A hand-colored political cartoon by Bernhard Gillam, dated 1884, shows a bearded figure in ornate robes striking a rock with a staff while a crowd of turbaned, caricatured men reaches toward the water pouring from it. Barrels labeled with dollar signs are stacked on the left beside a sign reading 'This stream stopped running in November 1876,' and a sunrise and tent camp fill the background.
