About this work
A hand-colored print by Bernhard Gillam from 1885, titled 'The sleeping party', shows a crowd of richly dressed, drowsing figures in a castle hall draped with curtains and webs. A sleeping princess lies on a canopied bed at the top of a stone staircase, while guests slump over a feast table and across the steps. Many figures are labeled with names written on their clothing or sashes.
