About this work
This chromolithographic political cartoon by Bernhard Gillam, dated 1883, shows Uncle Sam in striped trousers and a wide-brimmed hat striding past a crowd of caricatured politicians, some frozen on icy ledges at left. A balloon labeled Beecher's 70th Birthday Celebration floats at upper right beside a burst of fireworks and a figure holding a pistol.
