About this work

A colored caricature shows Uncle Sam standing before a crowded market street, with goods labeled flour, sugar, wheat, cheese, and ammunition. Across the street, a Russian figure and an English figure shake hands beneath a sign reading "Let us have truce," while a seated man at right reads a map of India. Bernhard Gillam's print "Peace, but not business" dates to 1885.
