About this work
A colored political cartoon shows a group of caricatured men in turbans and robes struggling in a desert around a kneeling camel labeled Tariff Bill, which is loaded with crates and bundles marked Amendments. A figure in the foreground crawls on the ground while skulls and animal bones litter the sand, and an elephant labeled Republican rides in the distance. The print is signed by Bernhard Gillam and dated 1884.
