About this work

A chromolithographic cartoon shows a large American battleship firing on and sinking a Spanish fleet, with explosions and a flag in the background. Uncle Sam stands at the right with an outstretched arm while a row of caricatured European figures watches from the left, with labels such as Spain, Russia, Italy, and France. Circular portraits of naval and military figures float in the smoke above, including Sampson, Schley, Hobson, and Dewey. This print by Udo Keppler, dated 1898, was published with the title Celebrating July 4th, 1898.
