About this work
A chromolithographic cartoon by Udo Keppler, dated 1898, shows Uncle Sam and a figure of Columbia standing before a 'U.S. Foundling Asylum' gate while a hand delivers baskets of infants labeled Hawaii and Philippines, tagged 'Manifest Destiny.' Children playing on the lawn behind them are dressed in caps and costumes, and the scene reflects the period's imperial commentary.
