About this work
A hand-colored print shows a bearded man in 16th-century dress, standing in profile and holding a halberd with a feathered hat, ruff collar, gold chain, and slashed sleeves. The figure wears a grey breastplate, yellow-brown puffed breeches, and blue-grey shoes, with a sword at his side. The caption identifies the subject as a Swiss guard of the kings of France, after an unpublished stained-glass window, by Raphaël Jacquemin, dated 1869.
