About this work
This plate from Chōjū ryakugashiki by Masayoshi Kitao shows numerous turtles in varied poses and sizes, some with red shells and some with dark grey shells, drawn with simple outlines and flat colour. The animals appear in dynamic positions, walking, turning and seeming to tumble across the page.
