About this work
A Japanese woodblock print titled A Present-Day Kagesue by Toshikata Mizuno, dated 1895, shows an officer in black uniform with a red-striped trouser leg and a raised sword, leaping along a stone wall while streaks of gunfire cross the scene. Smoke clouds, a pine tree and a mountain fill the background, and enemy soldiers in blue uniforms are shown behind the wall at left.
