About this work
A Japanese woodblock print shows a kabuki-style actor in a striped black and purple robe, drawing a bow while a second figure in a red patterned garment raises a spear behind him. Blossoming plum branches with red flowers extend across the upper part of the sheet above a snowy ground. The print is by Toyokuni Utagawa and dated 1818, with the actor's name written in calligraphy at the upper left.
