About this work
A dense sepia engraving of a Civil War battle, with infantry locked in hand-to-hand combat across a rocky field beneath billowing smoke. Cavalry and artillery appear at left, and wounded and dead soldiers lie scattered in the foreground. The work is a print after Peter Frederick Rothermel's painting of The Battle of Gettysburg, dated 1872.
