About this work

A lithograph titled In Naples by Honoré Daumier, dated 1851, shows a crowned, richly decorated monarch leaning on a balcony and surveying a city street. Below him, figures hang from gallows and bodies lie on the pavement, while smoke rises over the distant bay. The printed French caption beneath the scene ironically describes the best of kings continuing to keep order in his states.
