Daumier went to jail in 1832 after his caricature of King Louis Philippe, Gargantua, was published. Born poor in Marseille, he was working by about age twelve and began drawing at a Paris bookstore. His caricatures for La Caricature and Le Charivari went after judges, lawyers and politicians. He also painted, often the same subject many times, but critics and the public largely ignored the paintings. A large show of his paintings at the Durand-Ruel Gallery in Paris was well received in 1878, a year before he died in Valmondois. Browse 2,862 works by Honoré Daumier, free to download in HD.
