About this work
A hand-colored political cartoon titled The Writing on the Wall shows well-dressed legislators feasting at a long table on pork barrel dishes labeled harbors, rivers, post offices and patronage, while a pig and a barrel labeled Pork Barrel sit nearby. Above them, a robed figure in the upper right holds a sword and a banner reading PREPARE, and a speaker at a podium beneath an American flag calls for rallying to national defense. The work was produced by Carey Cartoon Service in 1916.
