About this work
A hand-colored political cartoon shows Uncle Sam at the entrance of a Chop Suey restaurant, with Japan greeting him while Russia, armed with a club, smashes the interior where China lies on the floor. Seated at a table inside, national personifications including England, France, Italy, Belgium, Romania and Serbia dine together. The work is titled Outside the Open Door, attributed to Carey Cartoon Service, dated 1916.
