About this work
A hand-colored political cartoon titled Folly of the Circus, issued weekly in 1917 by the Carey Cartoon Service. Caricatured national figures perform as circus acrobats on a high wire and atop a line of elephants labeled with battle names such as Verdun and the Battle of the Marne, while a figure labeled Mars and a clown labeled Turkey look on. Speech bubbles carry satirical captions in the manner of a circus ringmaster's commentary.
