About this work
A hand-colored political cartoon titled Awake at the Switch, issued weekly by Carey Cartoon Service in 1916. Caricatured national figures such as a bear labeled Russia, a rooster labeled France, and a lion labeled Italy are shown beside a runaway train and signs reading Cancelled, Failure and Success. The composition uses speech balloons and a circus-train motif to comment on the political and military situation of 1914 to 1916.
