About this work
A 1915 political cartoon titled Asleep on the Deep, issued by the Carey Cartoon Service, shows a figure labeled War looming over a crowd of armed national personifications, including Russia, France, England, Austria, Germany, Belgium and Serbia, while a man in a small car fires a starter pistol. A sleeping figure in a bed on a Peace Ship at right and a distant Hague Peace Palace at left frame the satirical scene.
