About this work
A caricature drawing by Samuel Ehrhart from 1899 shows a tall, top-hatted Uncle Sam striding forward while soldiers with rifles march toward a steamship flying the American flag. Behind him, a group of women carry books labeled reading, writing, spelling and history of civilization, while barefoot islanders on the right, some seated and some standing, look on beside palm trees.
