Hogarth's father opened a Latin-speaking coffee house in London that failed, and he was jailed for debt for five years. William never spoke of it. He was apprenticed to an engraver and in 1731 finished A Harlot's Progress, six scenes that follow a country girl to her death. Pirated copies of his prints pushed him to lobby parliament, and the Engravers' Copyright Act became law in 1735. He later painted Marriage A-la-Mode and divided his time between Leicester Fields and a house in Chiswick, where he was buried in 1764.
