Turner's father, a London barber, showed his son's drawings in the shop window. The boy was born in Covent Garden in 1775 and entered the Royal Academy Schools at 14. By 27 he was a Royal Academician, one of the youngest in the Academy's history. He filled nearly 300 sketchbooks on his travels and tried painting storms and fog. His later landscapes became more abstract and weren't well received, and he left about 100 finished oil paintings to the nation.
