No paintings by Jacques Callot are known, but he made more than fourteen hundred etchings of soldiers, beggars and court life. Born in Nancy in Lorraine, he was apprenticed to a goldsmith and then learned engraving in Rome. He lived in Florence from 1612 and often worked for the Medici court. After Cosimo II de' Medici died in 1621, he went back to Nancy and lived there for the rest of his life. His best-known prints are the Miseries of War series, published in 1633, the year Lorraine was invaded by the French. Browse 1,591 works by Jacques Callot from 21 museums, free to download in HD.
