About this work
This painting, titled Death of the Virgin and attributed to Giovanni Francesco Caroto, shows the Virgin lying on a bed draped in blue cloth while a circle of haloed apostles gathers around her. A candle and an open book are held by figures near the bed, and a small group of angels appears in the clouds at the top of the composition. The work is held by the Princeton University Art Museum.
