About this work
This oil painting depicts a medieval battle scene with a armored woman on a white horse holding a white banner decorated with fleur-de-lis and a religious image of Christ with angels. Surrounding riders, soldiers with spears and swords, and fallen figures fill a dusty, smoky field. The work is the central part of a triptych titled The Life of Joan of Arc, painted by Hermann Stilke in 1843 and held by the Hermitage Museum.
