About this work
The painting shows a procession of robed mourners carrying a bier on which a figure in dark blue draping lies, with haloes visible above several of the figures. The group moves across a bare ground under a pale blue sky, with the bearers and onlookers rendered in red, green, and ochre garments. This is Giovanni Francesco Caroto's Funeral of the Virgin, held by the Princeton University Art Museum.
