About this work
A double-page sketchbook spread showing three bats in flight and a separate bat head study, alongside a branch of chestnut leaves with two open spiny burrs revealing glossy nuts. The bats are rendered in soft grey-brown ink wash with fine fur strokes, and the botanical elements are painted in muted greens and reds. The work is attributed to Ariyoshi Kondo, dated 1826-1840, and is catalogued as Sketchbook Pl.064.
