About this work
A richly coloured allegorical cityscape shows three buildings side by side: a mansion labelled Vanderbilt's Palace, a Gothic church labelled Stewart's Cathedral, and a classical hall inscribed To Science and Art for the Cooper Institute. Cherubs study books and a globe in the lower right, while money bags, a peacock, a pig and champagne bottles crowd the left. Graetz's 1883 print, titled Three monuments, uses these figures to contrast wealth and display with learning and art.
