About this work
A chromolithographic political cartoon from 1884 by Friedrich Graetz, titled A picture without words. A large striped tiger wearing a cap and a cloak labeled Romish Influence prowls over a fallen woman beside an open book inscribed Public School System, while a tiger gnaws at another book and a frightened child cowers on a chair. Smaller vignettes across the top show a woman guiding children through the public school system, with the tiger lurking behind them.
