About this work
A lithographic caricature by Friedrich Graetz from 1883 shows a crowded banquet scene with figures labeled by nationality, including a Frenchman, Italian, Russian, Englishman and German, gathered around a table. A figure resembling Uncle Sam raises a toast beside an allegorical woman draped in the American flag, while a cradle holds infants labeled as Germantown and Malamany. Oval medallions of Steuben, Washington and Lafayette hang above the scene under a banner marking the bicentennial of the first German settlement.
