About this work
A hooded, skeletal figure labeled Necessity looms over a cramped workroom, reaching toward a young child who holds a basket, while a sign on the door reads Machinery Operated by Children, Men Need Not Apply. Through the open doorway, two children walk toward a distant factory skyline with smokestacks. The print is by Art Young, dated 1912.
