About this work
A chromolithographic cartoon titled Futility, made by Udo Keppler in 1899. A volcano labeled WAR spews smoke and fire over a devastated landscape of wrecked structures and dead trees. A winged, laurel-crowned woman labeled PEACE sits at left while a small figure carries a shield reading PEACE CONFERENCE toward the crater, and a helmeted armored warrior watches from the right.
